ROOFTOP SOLAR PROGRAMME (10MW +)

The programme is a net-metered grid-connected solar project which targets households, commercial and industrial sectors. The pilot was limited to 10 MW of which 2 MW was reserved for the households but remains on-going. The programme will be reviewed and provisions made for imrpovement. Through this programme the government is PV, based on international experiences and best practice.

35MW MINI-GRIDS IN 12 VILLAGES

“The programme will deliver twelve (12) mini grid-tied PV systems connected to ranging from 0.4 to 4 MW.

Five sites have been awarded, the remaining seven sites are currently out to tender. Tender closing in March 2023.”

SOUTHERN AFRICA MEGA SOLAR PROJECT

The programme’s 6 partners intends to develop and implement Mega Solar Programme in the Southern Africa (Botswana and Namibia) region by developing 2 – 5 gigawatts (GW) of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) power and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) over the next 20 years. MOU with AfDB and SRMI facility

“INTEGRATED SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR ARABLE AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT (ISPAAD) / IMPACT ACCELERATOR SUBSIDY (IAS)”

The Integrated Support Programme for Arable Agriculture Development (ISPAAD) introduced the Horticulture Impact Accelerator Subsidy (IAS) fund. The fund assist with a list of agri-related activities and includes P350 000 grant for solar equiping of boreholes. Citizens are required to provide the additional 50% .

SOLTRAIN PROJECT

“SOLTRAIN has been implemented in 6 partner countries in phases. The project aims to improve the uptake of solar thermal technologies by building capacity, encouraging policy development, support plannning and provide grants for demonstrations systems that fit specified criteria. SOLTRAIN + should be launched in December 2022 and will further include energy efficiency audits, Industrial applications and a women in energy workpackage.”

The SRMI Facility’s objective is to support the eligible countries (Including Botswana) to shift to low-emission sustainable development pathways and increase access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to its populations.

Botswana focal areas are:

1. Park shared infrastructure for 200 MW CSP and 100 MW wind,
2. VRE integration and grid upgrades including 50 MWh of storage, and
3. Electrification for estimated 600,000 people; and
4. Risk mitigation instrument covering liquidity/termination for private investors competitively selected for CSP and/or wind projects developed under SRMI
